1000dates and designing AI around social risk
Dating software is a reminder that AI product design has to account for vulnerability, not only matching logic.

1000dates, built in collaboration with Nas Daily, is an AI dating platform centered on personalized dating experiences. The obvious technical questions are about matching and conversation starters, but the deeper product questions are about social risk.
Dating products deal with awkwardness, uncertainty, and presentation. AI can reduce friction by helping people start conversations or understand compatibility, but it can also make interactions feel staged if it overreaches. The design challenge is to help without making the person disappear behind the assistant.
I thought a lot about where AI should enter the loop. A suggestion before a conversation can be helpful. A system that writes too much of the interaction can feel dishonest. The product needs to support confidence while keeping the user's actual personality in the foreground.
This project helped me see that social AI products need taste and restraint. The model is not the experience. The experience is whether two people feel more comfortable showing up honestly.
takeaways.
- Social products have emotional failure modes, not just technical ones.
- AI should support expression without replacing it.
- Good personalization still needs user agency.
