Nova Home Assistant, from hackathon demo to physical interface

What changed when an AI assistant had to live in hardware instead of a browser tab.

Nova was built around a simple question: what happens when an AI assistant has a physical presence and a bounded job in the home? At the Penn State hackathon, the work was less about making a chatbot and more about coordinating hardware, software, latency, and presentation into something people could understand quickly.

The physical layer changed the product expectations. A browser app can hide pauses behind loading states. A device sitting in front of someone cannot. Every delayed response, unclear state, or missed handoff feels more awkward because the object implies immediacy. That made feedback states and predictable task boundaries more important than raw model capability.

Working on top of OpenClaw also forced the team to think about affordances. If the assistant can move, listen, and respond, the interface has to communicate what it is doing without requiring a manual. We had to balance ambition with a demo that would not collapse under the pressure of live judging.

The finalist result mattered, but the bigger lesson was about embodied AI: once software touches the physical world, reliability becomes part of the product's personality. A clever answer is less valuable than a system that behaves legibly.
